Daicel Polymer of Japan announced that it has increased the strength of thermoplastic resins doped with cellulose fibers to the level that can be used in automotive construction materials. The new products have been publicly displayed at the "4th High-Performance Plastics Exhibition" (August 8-10, 2015, Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center). The raw material of the cellulose fiber is derived from a plant, and when used in combination with a polyamide (PA) which is also derived from plants, a material which is completely free from petroleum can be formed.

Previously, cellulose reinforced fiber resin was used in the construction of materials, and there was a lack of strength and rigidity. The high-strength cellulose fiber was developed in the plastics industry of Daicel, and after it was made into long fibers, the tensile strength exceeded 120 MPa, the flexural modulus was about 5500 MPa, and the impact strength of the simply supported beam was obtained with 30% fiber. At 50 kJ/m2, these properties are equivalent to those of glass long fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP). According to reports, the cellulose fibers developed this time are more rigid than glass fibers, which is expected to reduce the weight of components.

The prototype has a particle length of 4 to 11 mm and contains cellulose fibers of the same length. Daisei Plastics Industry Co., Ltd. stated that even if the injection molding machine is used to form 4mm long particles, the impact strength of the simply supported beam is about 30kJ/m2. The company said it "plans to supply a small number of samples from the summer of 2015."

The Daicels Plastics Industry is currently developing materials that combine plant-derived PA1010 with cellulosic fibers. According to reports, this material can obtain tensile strength above 100MPa, flexural modulus of 5,000MPa or more and impact strength of simply supported beam of about 44kJ/m2.
