According to foreign media reports, a team of bionic engineers from the Harvard's Wyss Institute has been inspired by tears to develop deformable materials that can change transparency and roughness as needed.

The researchers said that when the material is stretched or physically manipulated, continuous injection of a liquid film into the nanoporous elastic substrate can change its properties. External force manipulation can make the nanopores in it larger or smaller, resulting in deformation of the surface of the continuously filled liquid.

The surface of traditional materials is not hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Based on the pitcher blade inspiration, the Weiss Institute has developed a porous, liquid-filled, smooth surface. The research team is already working on developing materials that can be easily transformed in two states, partly because it can change the flexibility of the pore size. Just as tears can come together to protect the eyes from dirt or dust.

The research team hopes to expand the applicability of this material to the fields of light, temperature, magnetic fields, and electricity, and that one day it may be applied to building smart buildings. (Shang Li)
