Cold-formed steel and hot-rolled steel differ significantly in their manufacturing processes, structural behavior, and mechanical properties. One key difference is that cold-formed steel allows for local buckling of the cross-section, enabling the post-buckling load capacity to be effectively utilized. In contrast, hot-rolled steel is designed to avoid local buckling due to its more rigid structure.
Another distinction lies in the residual stress distribution. The residual stresses in hot-rolled steel are typically thin-film type, while those in cold-formed steel exhibit a curved pattern across the cross-section. These differences arise from the distinct forming methods used in each process.
In terms of torsional stiffness, hot-rolled steel generally has a higher resistance to twisting compared to cold-rolled steel. This makes hot-rolled sections more suitable for applications where torsional strength is critical.
Cold-rolled seamless pipes are manufactured by processing steel plates or strips through cold drawing, cold bending, and other techniques at room temperature. This method offers several advantages, including high forming speed, improved yield strength, and the ability to produce various cross-sectional shapes without damaging the coating. Cold rolling also induces plastic deformation, which enhances the yield point of the steel.
However, there are some disadvantages to consider. Although cold-rolling doesn’t involve thermal plastic compression, residual stresses still exist in the cross-section, potentially affecting overall performance and leading to local buckling. Additionally, cold-rolled steel profiles often have open cross-sections, resulting in lower torsional stiffness and a tendency to twist under bending or compressive loads. Their thinner walls and lack of corner reinforcement also reduce their ability to handle concentrated loads.
Hot-rolled seamless pipes, on the other hand, are produced at temperatures above the recrystallization point, offering benefits such as refined grain structure and improved mechanical properties. The hot-rolling process helps eliminate internal defects like bubbles and cracks, leading to denser material with better strength and ductility.
Despite these advantages, hot-rolled steel has its drawbacks. Non-metallic inclusions can become layered during rolling, reducing the steel’s performance in the thickness direction and increasing the risk of interlayer tearing. Residual stresses from uneven cooling can also affect the structural behavior, especially under external forces. Furthermore, controlling dimensions like thickness and width is more challenging in hot-rolled products, as thermal contraction after cooling leads to dimensional variations, particularly in larger sections.
Overall, both cold-formed and hot-rolled steels have unique characteristics that make them suitable for different applications. Understanding their differences helps in selecting the right material for specific engineering needs.
