Pressure test of cryogenic pipe (Q345D seamless steel pipe)

Liaocheng Strategic Materials Co., Ltd. News: Recently, we conducted a pressure test on a low-temperature pipeline made of Q345D seamless steel pipe. One of the key concerns during this process was preventing water trapped inside the valve from freezing and causing damage. So, how should this test be properly carried out? The barometric test is considered too risky, so it's not a recommended option.

Hydrostatic testing is generally not advised for cryogenic systems. If the system isn't fully purged before the test, ice plugs can form, which could lead to serious issues. In most cases, an air pressure test is preferred. The test pressure should be 1.15 times the design pressure, which is relatively safe. However, if a water pressure test is needed after the airtightness test, the pressure should be set to the design pressure level.

If there are safety concerns with an air pressure test, another alternative is to perform only an airtightness test. Additionally, when dealing with butt welds at temperatures below -20°C, it’s required to conduct 100% radiographic inspection of all welds, including fillet welds. On the outer surface, 100% magnetic particle or penetrant testing can also be used to ensure quality without the need for a full pressure test.
