New progress of continuous variable section thin plate in automobile lightweight application

Safety, energy conservation and environmental protection are the main goals of today's automotive industry. Automotive lightweight technology provides a guarantee for this goal. The main ways to achieve lightweight technology for automobiles include rational design of materials and lightweight materials. Lightweight materials also include lightweight new materials, high-strength steel sheets and lightweight structural materials based on new material processing techniques. The cost of the first two methods is 2.5 times that of ordinary steel plates, so new material processing technologies such as laser tailor welded blanks and continuous variable-section thin plates under the third approach have received more and more attention. Continuous variable section sheets, also known as Tailor Rolling Blanks (TRB), appeared after the Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB), which was first developed by the Institute of Metal Forming (IBF), Aachen University of Technology, Germany. Research and development began in 1990. The TRB plate is obtained by a new rolling process, the flexible rolling technology, in which the pitch of the rolls is adjusted in real time by a computer during the rolling process, so that the rolling is pre-rolled along the rolling direction. Customized sheet of variable cross-sectional shape. Compared with the TWB board, the TRB board has the advantages of no weld seam, good surface quality, smooth transition of the transition zone, high strength and good uniformity.

At present, TRB technology has evolved from the initial laboratory research to the industrial production stage. Germany's Mubea has cooperated with IBF technology to build two TRB board production lines with an annual output of more than 15 million TRB board parts for Audi, BMW and GM. Domestically, Northeastern University's research on variable-section rolling technology is also at the forefront of the world. Northeastern University began researching variable thickness rolling technology more than ten years ago. In recent years, the experimental research on TRB board has also achieved certain results. It has successfully developed related components and established the first TRB board production line in China.

As a new automotive lightweight technology, TRB has received more and more attention. This paper introduces the research status of TRB board technology at home and abroad in combination with the application of TRB board in European Body Conference (ECB) from 2002 to 2012. New developments in automotive manufacturing, key technologies and trends in applications.

Application and progress of TRB board in automobile manufacturing

The TRB board provides a new choice for automotive lightweighting. Designers can select TRB boards of different thicknesses, lengths, and different cross-section sizes and shapes according to the force and structural requirements of the parts, that is, “tailor-made”. . Compared with equal-thickness plates, the amount of steel is reduced and the reasonable distribution of performance is achieved, which not only reduces the weight but also improves the performance. The automotive parts made using TRB steel sheets are shown in Figure 1.

1. Status of foreign applications

The European Body Conference has always been a platform for major automakers to showcase their new technologies and new technologies. The application of TRB panels in automobiles from 2002 to 2012 can be found in the attached table. As can be seen from the table, the German car prefers the application of TRB technology, which is inseparable from the origin of TRB technology in Germany, and the world's first TRB supplier is also the German Mubea company. Among the German cars, TRB technology includes Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Opel, among which Mercedes-Benz has the most prominent application. Since the first application of the TRB board in 2002, Mercedes-Benz has increased the application progress of TRB in the following years. In 2009, the number of TRB boards in the E-class and the 2011 B-class vehicles reached eight (see Figure 2). In recent years, companies such as Ford and Citroen have also promoted the application of TRB board parts.
