The University of Bern conducted a study on the use of digital media at night to increase the risk of sleep and depression, which surveyed more than 300 students. The University of Bern study investigates the differences in the use of digital media between teenagers using smartphones and peers using ordinary mobile phones. 162 girls and 200 boys from 12-17 years old in northwestern Switzerland participated in the survey. The results show that teenagers using smartphones spend twice as much time online as teenagers using regular mobile phones, averaging two hours to one hour. In addition, they send more text messages, and the gap is even more disparate. On average, the number of text messages sent reaches 85:7.

The most obvious difference found in the study was at night, after the teenagers went to bed. Only 17% of smartphone users turn off the power or turn the phone into silent mode, and 47% of regular mobile phone users do this. In addition, smartphone users watch videos, surf the Internet, or communicate with friends more frequently at night than teenagers using regular mobile phones. Most importantly, teenagers who use digital media at night increase the risk of sleep deprivation and depression. Therefore, experts recommend that teenagers with sleep disorders or fatigue during the day turn off the phone at least one hour before going to bed.
