One major concern was the risk of water remaining inside the valves, which could freeze and cause damage during the test. The barometric test was considered too risky, so an alternative method needed to be explored.
Hydrostatic testing is generally not recommended for cryogenic systems due to the potential formation of ice plugs if the system isn't fully purged. In most cases, an air pressure test is preferred, with a test pressure set at 1.15 times the design pressure. This approach is safer and more practical, especially when compared to hydrostatic testing, which is typically conducted after an airtightness test at the design pressure level.
If there are concerns about the safety of an air pressure test, another option is to perform only an airtightness test. Additionally, when working with pipelines operating below -20°C, all butt welds must undergo 100% radiographic inspection. If all welds—both fillet and butt—are inspected, it may be possible to skip the pressure test altogether. Alternatively, 100% magnetic particle or penetrant testing on the outer surface can also serve as a reliable substitute for pressure testing.
