In recent months, the popularity of silk bedding has been on the rise due to its softness and lighter feel compared to traditional cotton options. However, with a wide variety of products available in shopping malls, many consumers are now confused by the different "high-tech" and "multi-functional" claims made by manufacturers. Experts advise buyers to pay close attention to the actual silk content when making a purchase.
A reporter recently visited several stores and found significant price variations among different brands of silk quilts. At a mall on Huayan Road, a single-sized quilt was priced at 388 yuan. According to the salesperson, this was a real silk quilt that sold five or six units daily and was currently on promotion. Despite the claim of being "real silk," an inspection revealed that only 30% of the filling was actual silk, while the rest was made of polyester fiber. In some large department stores, silk quilts can cost over 4,000 yuan.
Beyond the high prices, various marketing terms like "Jinsang Silk Quilt," "Goose Silk Quilt," and "Silk Emollient Quilt" have added to the confusion. Some sellers even use "Deluxe Edition" to justify higher prices. For example, one store priced a "silk emollient quilt" twice as much as a regular silk quilt, claiming it used the best quality silk for better skin contact. However, upon closer inspection, some labels showed that the silk content was only between 10% and 30%, with the rest being cotton or polyester fillers.
According to China's current "Silk National Standard," a quilt must contain 100% silk to be called a pure silk quilt. If the silk content is 50% or more, it is considered a mixed silk quilt. Anything below 50% cannot be labeled as a silk quilt. The standard also divides products into three grades—excellent, first-class, and qualified—based on the silk content and filler quality.
Experts warn that many of the price differences driven by these "concepts" are often just marketing hype. When purchasing silk quilts, consumers should not be swayed by fancy names or high prices. Instead, they should focus on the actual composition of the product and choose what suits their needs rather than assuming that a higher price always means better quality.
