The family of brominated flame retardants includes more than 70 different chemicals with various properties. A few halogenated flame retardants are environmentally hazardous, but a flame retardant does not represent the entire flame retardant family. Each chemical has its own uniqueness. It cannot be simply classified into a family based on the inclusion of an element in the chemical. It is considered that the family has a common attribute. Therefore, the environmental protection of the flame retardant has nothing to do with whether or not the halogen is contained.
The role of the flame retardant is to prevent the occurrence of fire, delay the arrival of the flash, give people more opportunities to escape, and thus reduce the occurrence of disasters. The fire itself is toxic, and the main causes of death from fires are toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These toxic gases are produced whether or not you use flame retardants or whether you use brominated flame retardants. Therefore, the bromine-based flame retardant not only does not exacerbate the toxicity of fire, but also contributes to environmental protection from the viewpoint of suppressing the occurrence of fire and reducing the generation of toxic gases.
At the same time, the US Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the European Regulations, Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and numerous other laws and regulations around the world have strict regulations on chemicals including flame retardants. . After rigorous evaluation, most brominated flame retardants can be safely used in consumer products. It is worth mentioning that BSEF has further researched some brominated flame retardants, such as tetrabromobisphenol A. We have found that it can meet more stringent requirements than the above regulations in terms of environmental protection and human health. For example, when used in a printed circuit board, tetrabromobisphenol A is a reactive flame retardant that ultimately produces a brominated epoxy resin. Such boards have a very low risk of exposure to chemicals for the public and are very safe.
Not all brominated flame retardants are persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Only one of the brominated flame retardants currently in production and sales is POPs, namely HBCD, so the environmental protection of flame retardants is not related to whether or not halogen is contained.
