Classification of lifting machinery

Hoisting machinery is categorized into different types based on their structure, including light and small lifting equipment, elevators, cranes, and overhead monorail systems. Light and small lifting equipment typically includes items like pulleys, spreaders, jacks, manual hoists, electric hoists, and basic winches. These devices are usually compact, lightweight, and user-friendly. Most of them are manually operated, making them ideal for situations where the workload isn't too heavy. They can be used independently or as part of a larger crane system in some applications. Some of these tools, such as hydraulic jacks used in truck cranes, have impressive lifting capacities—up to 750 tons in certain cases.

Elevators, lifting platforms, mine hoists, and hopper elevators are designed for vertical or nearly vertical lifting along fixed paths. Cranes, on the other hand, are more complex machines that not only lift but also move heavy loads horizontally within a specific area. Overhead monorail systems consist of rigid rails that allow materials to be transported efficiently throughout a facility or even outside of it. These systems are widely used in industrial environments to improve material handling and workflow efficiency.

The basic mechanism of crane machinery involves a lifting system that enables the fundamental action of raising and lowering materials. Depending on the type of machine, additional mechanisms may be present, such as an operating mechanism, a luffing mechanism, a slewing mechanism, or specialized components. Materials can be lifted using flexible elements like wire ropes or chains, or through rigid components like screws or hydraulic cylinders. This variety of design options ensures that hoisting machinery can be tailored to meet the needs of different industries and applications.
