Although drones are becoming more common in various industries, one of the biggest challenges remains extending their battery life for long-range flights. To tackle this issue, researchers at MIT are exploring innovative solutions. In their experiment, they used a fixed-wing drone that can perch on power lines and utilize the magnetic field generated by the electricity flowing through them for wireless charging.
While flexible rotorcraft drones are better suited for maneuvering around obstacles, fixed-wing drones offer higher speed and energy efficiency, making them a more practical choice for this project. The main challenge was figuring out how to let the drone stop, hover, and securely attach itself to a power line.
Inspired by birds like eagles and pigeons, which can land and perch effortlessly, the team developed a small glider made from lightweight foam. This prototype is designed to hook onto power lines and charge wirelessly, opening up new possibilities for extended drone operations.
This isn't just an MIT initiative. Several other institutions, including the University of Illinois, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the University of California, San Diego, and even aviation companies, are also working on similar concepts. As technology advances, we may soon see drones that can recharge themselves mid-flight, revolutionizing how they're used in search and rescue, delivery, and environmental monitoring.
