Future drone will be able to "charge"

Although drones are now being used in more and more areas, how to obtain longer battery life has become a key issue for long-distance flight. To this end, MIT researchers are now beginning to find solutions to this problem. In the experiment, the researchers used a fixed-wing drone so that it could inhabit the charging line and use the generated magnetic field for charging.

Although flexible rotorcraft drones are better able to inhabit objects on a certain day than fixed-wing drones, the latter has faster flight speeds and higher energy efficiency, so researchers eventually chose fixed-wing drones. It is reported that the main challenge for researchers is to find a way to allow drones to pause, stagnate, and hook onto power lines.

Thus, the researchers thought of eagles, pigeons, and other birds, hoping to find solutions from them. At present, they have developed a small glider made of foam material, which can achieve the goal of hooking the power cord.

In fact, not only MIT is seeking answers to this question. The University of Illinois, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the University of California, San Diego, and the Aviation Environment Corporation are also conducting similar research and development.

As drone technology continues to evolve, the need for extended flight times remains a major hurdle. While current drones are widely used in various applications, their limited battery life restricts their effectiveness in long-range missions. Researchers at MIT are taking a novel approach by exploring how drones can charge mid-flight, drawing inspiration from nature and advanced engineering.

In their experiments, MIT scientists tested a fixed-wing drone capable of latching onto power lines using electromagnetic fields. This method could potentially enable drones to recharge without landing, significantly increasing their operational range. While rotorcraft drones offer greater maneuverability, fixed-wing models are more efficient in terms of speed and energy consumption, making them a preferred choice for this project.

The biggest challenge was figuring out how to make the drone stop, hover, and securely attach itself to a power line. To solve this, the team looked to birds like eagles and pigeons, which are experts at perching and balancing. Based on these observations, they developed a lightweight glider made of foam that can successfully hook onto power lines during flight.

This innovation is just one of many ongoing efforts in the field. Other institutions, such as the University of Illinois, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the University of California, San Diego, and the Aviation Environment Corporation, are also working on similar concepts. These collaborative efforts suggest that the future of drone technology may involve not just flying, but also recharging autonomously in mid-air.
