As the spring equinox approaches, the cold season begins to fade, and temperatures rise quickly. In North China, the average daily temperature has already exceeded 10°C, marking the arrival of a bright and vibrant spring. The term "Spring Equinox" signifies that the land is thawing, and it's the peak time for planting, sowing, and managing vegetables.
During this period, greenhouse crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and cucumbers are being transplanted. Farmers must closely monitor weather changes and take advantage of the "cold tail, warm head" window for transplanting. For solanaceous crops like tomatoes and eggplants, the soil temperature at 10 cm depth should be above 10°C before transplanting. Similarly, for cucumbers and melons, the same temperature threshold applies. In the Beijing Plain area, this usually occurs in late March. If seedlings are large but the ground is still cool, using multi-layer covers can help raise the temperature. Additionally, it’s essential to clear the fields, remove old crop residues, dead leaves, and weeds, and transport them outside for high-temperature composting or other safe disposal methods. Proper attention should also be given to applying sufficient organic fertilizer, preparing the soil finely, and ensuring proper spacing between plants.
For managing fruits and vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers in solar greenhouses, maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity is crucial. During the day, the temperature should be kept between 23°C and 30°C, while at night it should be around 15°C. On cloudy days, reduce the temperature slightly and ensure good ventilation. Increasing light exposure by cleaning the greenhouse film improves light transmission. Water and fertilizer management should be done scientifically, and tasks such as pruning, removing yellow and old leaves, and controlling vine growth should be carried out promptly. Pest and disease control is equally important—cucumbers are prone to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and leaf spot, while tomatoes are susceptible to leaf mold and late blight. Insect pests such as aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and cotton bollworms also require careful monitoring and control.
For cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, and other cruciferous vegetables, a low-temperature hardening process should be conducted 5–7 days before planting. In the Beijing Plain, this typically happens in late March, and using a cover film can help increase the temperature effectively.
When sowing leafy and root vegetables like radishes, carrots, coriander, fennel, and spinach, it's important to improve soil quality by applying well-decomposed, finely processed organic fertilizer as base fertilizer. Sowing can be done through direct seeding or broadcasting, followed by watering and covering with mulch. The mulch should be removed once the seedlings reach about 70% height. Alternatively, using bamboo frames covered with agricultural film can help raise the temperature, allowing for earlier planting—up to 10–15 days ahead of schedule.
For open-field winter vegetables such as spinach, scallions, and leeks, timely cultivation is necessary. Dead leaves should be removed, and decomposed organic fertilizer should be applied as top dressing. Watering should be done in late March. For amaranth, biological or safe pesticides can be used to manage cockroach infestations.
