FAG bearings are commonly divided into rolling and sliding types. The difference between them lies in their working principles—rolling bearings experience rolling friction, while sliding bearings encounter sliding friction. The magnitude of the rolling friction depends largely on the manufacturing precision, whereas the sliding friction in a sliding bearing is influenced by the surface characteristics of the sliding material.
Sliding bearings can be further categorized into non-metallic and metallic types. Non-metallic sliding bearings are typically made from engineering plastics that are modified with fibers, smoothing agents, or glass beads to enhance their self-lubricating properties. These materials are then injection molded to produce high-performance plastic bearings. Leading manufacturers in this field include Germany’s IGUS and China’s CSB.
On the other hand, metal sliding bearings, such as three-layer composite bearings, are usually constructed with a steel base, followed by a layer of copper powder and a thin PTFE coating. This structure provides both strength and smooth operation. Major global manufacturers in this area include GGB (USA), OILES (Japan), and CSB (China).
There are several key differences between plastic and metal sliding bearings:
1. Plastic bearings are fully self-lubricating and have a longer service life compared to metal bearings, which only have a thin PTFE layer on the surface.
2. Plastic bearings are corrosion-resistant and do not rust, making them suitable for use in chemical environments where metal bearings might fail.
3. Plastic bearings are lighter in weight, which makes them ideal for applications requiring lightweight components.
4. The production cost of plastic bearings is generally lower due to the efficiency of injection molding, allowing for mass production.
5. Plastic bearings operate quietly and offer some vibration-damping capabilities, making them a preferred choice in many industries.
Due to these advantages, the application of plastic FAG bearings is expanding rapidly. They are now used in fitness equipment, office machines, and even in the automotive industry. Although many vehicles still use traditional bearings, the future of plastic FAG bearings looks promising, with growing market demand across various sectors.
