China Super America becomes the largest buyer of Turkish marble exports

On April 3, the Daily News reported that Cetinkaya, the president of Temel—a leading supplier of Turkish marble—revealed that China has overtaken the United States to become the largest buyer of Turkish marble exports. According to him, 80% of the company's marble exports go to China, and nearly 40% of all Turkish marble exports are destined for the Chinese market. Since the global financial crisis in 2008, the U.S., once the top importer, has gradually been replaced by China. Today, all major quarries in Turkey are ramping up production to meet the growing demand from China.
Turkey is home to over 100 types of marble, with reserves estimated at 5 billion cubic meters and 14 billion tons—accounting for 40% of the world’s total. The country holds the largest number of marble varieties globally. There are approximately 2,200 marble mines and 1,600 quarries operating across the nation. In 2012 alone, the industry generated $5 billion in output value, with $2 billion in exports.
This year, Bursa province in Turkey discovered a massive marble deposit containing 900 million tons of stone, valued at over $105 billion. These findings highlight the immense potential and ongoing significance of Turkey’s marble industry, especially in its growing relationship with China. As demand continues to rise, the sector is expected to play an even more critical role in Turkey’s economy in the coming years.
