Saint-Gobain New Product Grinding Technology Exchange Conference

During the China International Machine Tool Show, Saint-Gobain Abrasives hosted a technical exchange session focused on the latest advancements in grinding technology and their application within the automotive and auto parts industries. This event highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in abrasive solutions. Saint-Gobain Abrasives, founded in 1665, is a key division of the Saint-Gobain Group, a global leader in high-tech materials and services. Headquartered in France, the group has a long history of developing advanced materials that support various industrial sectors. As one of the world's largest manufacturers of abrasives, Saint-Gobain offers a comprehensive range of products, including bonded abrasives, coated abrasives, industrial superabrasives, resin cutting and polishing products, and diamond tools for construction applications. The company proudly represents three major brands: Norton, Winter, and Flexovit. These brands are known for their high-quality, reliable performance across multiple industries. With a unique position as the only global manufacturer offering all five categories of abrasive products, Saint-Gobain continues to set industry standards. At the event, Saint-Gobain showcased its latest innovations, including ceramic bond CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) wheels. These advanced tools are increasingly used in the automotive sector due to their superior hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability compared to traditional abrasives like alumina or silicon carbide. This makes them ideal for machining difficult-to-cut materials, especially in high-precision applications. For example, in camshaft grinding, ceramic bond CBN wheels significantly enhance production efficiency. To achieve optimal results, these wheels must operate at a minimum speed of 60 m/s, ensuring both high material removal rates and excellent surface finish quality. In addition, with the growing demand for precision in electronic manufacturing, tool grinding requirements have become more stringent. In particular, slot grinding demands high accuracy, with the ability to machine very thin grooves and achieve precise right-angle cuts. To meet these needs, Saint-Gobain introduced the Norton Hummingbird, a high-performance ceramic grinding wheel designed for ultra-precise applications. It combines high-quality corundum abrasives with the innovative Vitrium 3 ceramic bonding system, delivering exceptional shape retention, uniform structure, and stable grinding performance. Vitrium 3, launched globally in 2013, represents a breakthrough in bonding technology. Compared to traditional binders, it offers improved grinding efficiency, better surface finish, longer wheel life, and higher machining accuracy. This technology is particularly beneficial for high-speed grinding applications, such as those found in aerospace, automotive, gear, and bearing manufacturing. With a grinding speed of up to 80 m/s, Vitrium 3-based wheels provide enhanced metal removal rates and excellent shape retention, reducing the need for frequent dressing. Their open structure also helps prevent workpiece burns, making them ideal for complex and demanding machining processes. Through continuous innovation and a deep understanding of industry needs, Saint-Gobain Abrasives remains a trusted partner in advancing precision and efficiency across a wide range of industrial applications.
