On April 3, the Daily News reported that Cetinkaya, the president of Temel, a leading Turkish marble supplier, revealed that China has become the largest buyer of Turkish marble exports, surpassing the United States. For this company, 80% of its marble exports go to China, and 40% of all Turkish marble exports are destined for the Chinese market. Since the global financial crisis in 2008, the U.S., which used to be the top importer, has gradually lost its position to China. Today, all major quarries in Turkey are ramping up production to meet the growing demand from China. Turkey is home to over 100 types of marble, with reserves estimated at 5 billion cubic meters and 14 billion tons—making up 40% of the world’s total. The country holds the top position globally in terms of marble variety. There are around 2,200 active marble mines and 1,600 quarries across the nation. In 2012, the industry generated an output value of $5 billion, with exports reaching $2 billion. Recently, in early 2024, Bursa province in Turkey discovered a massive marble deposit containing 900 million tons of stone, valued at over $105 billion. This discovery highlights the continued significance of Turkey's marble industry and its strong ties with the Chinese market, which now plays a central role in the country's export economy. As demand from China continues to rise, Turkey is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the global marble trade.
