Creating an Indoor-Outdoor Kitchen with a Unique Take on the Scandi & California Styles

After successfully restoring a remarkable 'historic modern' Craftsman-style home in the vibrant neighborhood of Venice, California, the collaborative efforts of Abramson Architects, Joan Behnke & Associates, and M.E. Development have come together once again for an exciting new project just next door, located within the iconic Venice Walk Streets. This time, they’ve coined the term "Scandifornian Modern" to describe their innovative design, blending the simplicity of Scandinavian aesthetics, the laid-back charm of California, and the sleek sophistication of modern architecture.
The newly constructed home not only embodies the essence of Scandifornian minimalism but also pays homage to Japanese design principles through its thoughtful color palettes, the use of natural materials, and contemporary architectural silhouettes. Beyond its stylish appeal, the property's strategic location near the beach and its open floor plan, centered around a breathtaking kitchen, create an inviting atmosphere perfect for a lively coastal lifestyle. As interior designer Joan Behnke described it, "This is truly an entertainment home, where you can open up all the doors and enjoy the pool as well as the various outdoor spaces, from the front yard to the rooftop terrace."
Unlike their previous renovation project—a 1907 Craftsman bungalow that had to adhere strictly to local historical preservation guidelines—this latest endeavor offered the team greater creative freedom. With fewer restrictions, they were able to craft a design that feels cleaner, more modern, and thus more appealing to today’s audiences. "We kept the aesthetic simple yet striking, ensuring it would resonate with a broad range of contemporary tastes," Joan noted.
One of the standout features of this home is its luxurious kitchen, where dark, rich cabinetry contrasts beautifully with bright countertops, geometric brass lighting, and high-end appliances. Equipped with a Waterstone Modern PLP faucet suite, Contemporary Potfiller, and Contemporary Cabinet Hardware, the kitchen was designed with both timeless elegance and professional-grade functionality in mind.
Joan expressed her admiration for the Waterstone fixtures, saying, "They are sleek and blend seamlessly with the overall style of the house. We love how contemporary they look without being overly sharp or angular—qualities that ensure they won't appear outdated over time." She also highlighted the kitchen's practicality, stating, "Whether used daily by a family or as a culinary workspace for a professional chef, the kitchen offers intuitive operation and versatility."
The kitchen seamlessly connects to the dining and living areas, offering stunning views of the front garden and private deck. Sliding doors lead out to a secluded pool and jacuzzi tucked away on the side of the house. The wooden deck, comfortable lounge furniture, and TV create an inviting outdoor space that feels like an extension of the indoor living area. A cleverly placed sliding pass-through window allows easy access to the kitchen sink and faucet suite, making it convenient for guests to grab a glass of filtered water from the Waterstone filtration faucet or pass food and drinks between indoors and outdoors.
