The role of aluminum silicate in coatings

1. Ultra-fine aluminum silicate can replace part of titanium dioxide without affecting the dry film hiding power, while significantly improving the whiteness of the paint. When the amount of titanium dioxide remains constant, the hiding power and whiteness of the final coating are both noticeably enhanced.

2. With a pH range of 9.7 to 10.8, ultra-fine aluminum silicate acts as a natural pH buffer. This is especially beneficial in vinyl acetate latex paints, where hydrolysis of the resin can cause the pH to drop over time. By stabilizing the pH, it improves the dispersion stability of the paint and helps prevent corrosion of metal containers during storage.

3. The ultra-fine and grid-like structure of aluminum silicate helps increase the viscosity of the latex paint slightly, leading to better suspension properties. This prevents sedimentation and the formation of surface water or dry spots, ensuring a more uniform finish.

4. Incorporating ultra-fine aluminum silicate into latex paints enhances the durability of the film, offering improved scrub resistance and weather resistance. It also helps reduce drying time, making the paint application process more efficient.

5. Due to its matting effect, ultra-fine aluminum silicate serves as an economical matting agent for semi-gloss and matte finishes. However, it should not be used in clear varnishes, as it may interfere with the desired glossy appearance.
