Qingdao Wanxing International Hardware City, a major development project in the hardware and machinery sector, has been progressing in three phases. The first phase is already open, the second is expected to be completed this year, and the third will begin next year, with the entire complex set to be fully operational by 2015, accommodating around 2,000 merchants. According to an official from the project, the city's hardware market had long lacked a large-scale professional trading hub, which inspired the creation of this comprehensive facility.
Located across Jimo and Chengyang districts, the project spans 580 mu (approximately 387,000 square meters) with a total investment exceeding one billion yuan. It aims to become the largest and most diverse hardware and electrical machinery market in the Jiaodong Peninsula. The site was chosen due to its strategic location near Qingdao’s High-tech Zone, Chengyang EMU Town, and advanced manufacturing and logistics sectors. This positioning allows the market to serve surrounding industrial enterprises effectively.
The idea for the market came from the realization that while cities like Shanghai and Tianjin had well-established hardware markets, Qingdao lacked a similar large-scale platform. Initially, small street-side markets existed, such as those near Sifang Bus Station, but they were not developed on a commercial scale. The new project offers unified planning, investment, and management, along with financial support for merchants through direct bank partnerships, reducing risks and improving access to credit.
The first phase, launched in 2010 and opened in March 2011, covers 150 mu with a construction area of 50,000 square meters. It houses over 500 dealers and more than 200 merchants, achieving a 90% occupancy rate. The market offers a wide range of products, including tools, machinery, cables, and electrical equipment. Annual sales are estimated at about one billion yuan, with profits and taxes reaching 150 million yuan. Its influence extends across a 300-kilometer radius, drawing businesses from all over China.
Currently, the second phase is under construction, with scaffolding and cranes visible on-site. The main structure is being built, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Covering 220 mu and 170,000 square meters, it will add over 900 shops and expand the existing hardware and electromechanical areas. Once finished, it is projected to generate 2 billion yuan in annual turnover and employ 2,500 people.
Looking ahead, the third phase, planned for 2015, will focus on auto parts and include residential buildings, hotels, offices, and e-commerce platforms. This phase will cover 120 mu and feature 300 shops, aiming to boost employment by another 1,000 people. With the integration of wholesale, retail, logistics, and online trading, the market is set to become the largest and most comprehensive hardware hub in the region.
