Rounded corner design performs well on children's furniture brands

In the past year since the mandatory standards for children's furniture were introduced in China, a Beijing News reporter found that warning labels and ventilation holes remain the most poorly implemented features among many brands. The "General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture" is China's first national standard specifically for children's furniture, covering products designed for kids aged 3 to 14. Two key chapters of this standard are mandatory, focusing on structural safety and environmental protection.
During an on-site investigation at several major home furnishing markets in Beijing, the reporter discovered that over 80% of the brands failed to clearly mark warning signs like “Warning!†or “Beware of Pinching†on furniture with adjustable or folding parts, such as wardrobes and bunk beds. While these requirements are easy to implement, many brands dismiss them as unnecessary, claiming they have no practical value.
Some well-known international and domestic brands, including Danish brand Fresa, Italian brand Colombini, and Chinese brand Songpu Kingdom, were found to be non-compliant. Experts explain that without proper ventilation holes, cabinets can become dangerous if closed spaces trap children. However, many products lack these essential features. In one German store, reporters found wardrobes without vents and desks with sharp corners, while staff claimed they were working with manufacturers to adjust designs.
Some brands also use vague interpretations of the standard to avoid compliance. A salesperson from Songpu Kingdom explained that ventilation holes could be added upon customer request, even though the standard mandates their inclusion. Despite this, more than 90% of brands met basic safety requirements like rounded corners and drawer locks, but many still failed on ventilation specifications.
Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, emphasized that full implementation of the standard will take time and requires ongoing attention. While some companies claim exceptions, such as custom-made furniture, the responsibility ultimately lies with the manufacturers to ensure consumer safety. He noted that the standard was a significant step forward, making China’s regulations stricter than many international ones.
Although not all brands have fully adopted the rules, improvements have been made in areas like rounded edges and ventilation. Zhu believes the industry is still young and needs more time to mature. The introduction of the standard has helped improve the quality and safety of children’s furniture, with minimal impact on production costs. Ultimately, the success of the standard depends on companies’ willingness to comply and prioritize child safety.
