The basic principle of a direct gas pressure regulator involves the interaction between the pilot and the main valve. The pilot controls the spring mechanism, which regulates the opening of the pilot valve. When the pilot valve opens, the incoming pressure (P1) passes through this port, drops in pressure, and becomes the load pressure (P3). This P3 then acts on the large diaphragm, causing the main spring to compress via the actuator. As a result, the main valve opens, allowing the output airflow to exert force on both the large diaphragm and the pilot diaphragm, which helps close the main and pilot valve ports.
By adjusting the pilot, the spring can be controlled to set the desired output pressure (P2). In a balanced condition, the forces from P2 and the main spring on the large diaphragm are in equilibrium with the force from P3. Similarly, the force from P2 and the pilot spring on the pilot diaphragm also balance out. At this point, the inflow and outflow of air through the pilot are equal, keeping both the pilot and main valves open, and ensuring that P2 remains stable.
If the load increases and P2 drops, the system will respond by increasing the opening of both the pilot and main valves, allowing more flow and raising P2 back to the set value. Once equilibrium is restored, the system returns to a stable state. Conversely, when the load decreases and P2 rises, the process reverses to maintain regulation.
This mechanism ensures consistent and reliable pressure control, making the direct gas pressure regulator an essential part of many industrial and commercial gas systems. Its design allows for quick response times and accurate adjustments, making it a preferred choice in various applications.
