Mechanical seals, also known as mechanical face seals, are dynamic seals used for rotating shafts. They provide a reliable sealing function with minimal leakage, long service life, and low power consumption. Unlike traditional packing seals, mechanical seals require less frequent maintenance and can adapt to various harsh conditions such as high temperature, low temperature, high pressure, vacuum, high-speed rotation, and corrosive media. They are especially suitable for environments containing solid particles. A mechanical seal works by using one or more pairs of end faces that remain perpendicular to the shaft under the influence of fluid pressure and the elastic force (or magnetic force) from the compensating mechanism. These end faces move relative to each other to maintain a tight seal. When it comes to gear oil pumps, mechanical seals have several advantages over soft packing seals: **Advantages:** 1. **Stable Performance:** The sealing condition remains stable during long-term operation, with minimal leakage—about 1% of that seen in soft packing seals. 2. **Long Service Life:** In oil and water media, they typically last 1–2 years or longer, while in chemical media, they often work for over six months. 3. **Low Power Consumption:** The power loss is only 10%–50% of that in soft packing seals. 4. **Minimal Wear:** The shaft or bushing experiences little wear. 5. **Extended Maintenance Cycle:** The end face can be actively compensated after wear, reducing the need for frequent repairs. 6. **Good Shock Resistance:** They are insensitive to shaft vibration and misalignment within the sealed cavity. 7. **Versatile Applications:** Suitable for high temperature, low temperature, high pressure, vacuum, different rotational speeds, corrosive media, and abrasive environments. **Disadvantages:** 1. **Complex Design:** Higher precision is required in manufacturing and installation. 2. **Installation Challenges:** More complicated to install and replace, requiring skilled personnel. 3. **Difficult Handling in Emergencies:** If something goes wrong, fixing it can be challenging and costly. **Preparation Before Installation:** 1. Check the type of mechanical seal and ensure it meets the design requirements. Inspect parts, especially the sealing surface and auxiliary rings, for damage or deformation. Replace or correct any defective components. 2. Ensure the dimensions and surface finish of the mechanical seal parts meet the specifications. 3. For small spring mechanical seals, check the spring length and stiffness to ensure compatibility. 4. Verify the main unit's turbulence level. Ensure the shaft’s axial movement does not exceed ±0.5 mm, the radial runout of the rotating ring is no more than 0.06 mm, and the maximum shaft wobble is no more than 0.05 mm. 5. Ensure the sealing end cover and gasket are flat and aligned properly. The straightness difference should be between 0.03–0.05 mm. 6. Keep the sealing surfaces clean. The rotating ring, stationary ring, and auxiliary sealing ring must be free from dirt, dust, or impurities. 7. Avoid tapping or damaging the sealing elements to prevent damage.
