Court elevator posted "life and death"

Court elevator posted "life and death" A microblog user named "Changchun Hello" recently shared a shocking image on Weibo, showing a notice placed in front of an elevator at the Longtan District People’s Court in Jilin City. The sign read: “All consequences from using the elevator will not be the hospital's responsibility.” This alarming message quickly caught the attention of netizens, sparking widespread discussion online. On the afternoon of the 28th, a reporter visited the court to investigate the claim. Upon arrival, they found the notice still hanging near the elevator, behind an iron gate. The text on the sign warned that due to the elevator’s long service life, it could break down unexpectedly, and users were advised to take the stairs instead. It also stated that the hospital would not be held responsible for any accidents caused by using the elevator. The notice was removed early on the 29th, but when the reporter returned later, the sign had already been taken down. During the visit, the reporter was stopped by security guards and asked to register before being allowed into the building. Despite this, the staff did not appear to be available for interviews. A uniformed man explained that there was only one elevator in the building, which only reached the fifth floor. When the reporter followed a cleaner who had just removed the notice, she mentioned that the sign had been up for years and was routinely replaced as per instructions. However, the notice wasn’t reposted after being taken down, raising further questions about the court’s maintenance and communication practices. At 10:31 a.m., the hospital staff still hadn’t provided a response. A security guard informed the reporter that they had contacted a leader and would arrange an interview later. Shortly after, the reporter was led to an office near the elevator where two officials from the court met them. Ma Yumei, head of the Political Department Division, and Deng Wei, from the Propaganda Department, confirmed that the notice had been posted several years ago. They admitted that the leadership had not been fully aware of the issue at the time and needed to review the matter further. Regarding the legal implications, Deng Wei said the meeting was more of a courtesy than a formal press conference. After recording the reporter’s questions, he promised a detailed response once the leaders returned. To understand the legal perspective, the reporter consulted Xu Yongping, a lawyer at Changchun Yongping Law Firm. Xu emphasized that if an elevator is faulty, it should be taken out of service immediately. He added that in the event of an accident, the responsible parties would likely face legal consequences.
