How to control pea brown vein disease
Pea brown streak is a common disease that affects pea plants, primarily caused by fungal pathogens. The germs mainly overwinter on the seeds and spread through wind, rain, and contaminated tools. Planting too early, exposure to low temperatures, or conditions such as heavy soil, excessive moisture, or improper use of nitrogen fertilizer can all contribute to the development of this disease. The symptoms of pea brown streak typically appear on leaves, stems, and pods. Infected leaves show irregular, lavender-colored spots that can quickly expand under high temperature and humidity. As the infection progresses, the leaves turn yellow, curl, and eventually die. In some cases, dark brown, circular or irregular spots form, with a central area of necrosis and small black dots visible in the center. To prevent and manage pea brown streak, it's important to practice good agricultural techniques. One effective tip is to plant at the right time and ensure proper nutrient balance, especially by adding potassium fertilizer to strengthen the plants' resistance. For chemical control, it's recommended to spray a 50% wettable sulfur suspension diluted at 500 times or 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder diluted at 600 times when the disease is first detected. Apply the treatment every 7 days for 2–3 consecutive applications to effectively manage the infection. Additionally, crop rotation is highly beneficial. It's best to rotate peas with non-legume crops for at least 3 years to break the disease cycle. Before planting, you can also disinfect the seeds by soaking them in warm water for 4–5 hours, then placing them in 55°C water for 5 minutes. Afterward, cool them in cold water, dry them thoroughly, and proceed with sowing. These steps help reduce the risk of disease and improve overall plant health.
