Fish and shrimp growth largely depends on the protein synthesis in their bodies, which is achieved by breaking down feed protein. The energy required for movement and material synthesis mainly comes from feed energy substances and a portion of the protein. The use of protein in fish feed is about providing the right amount of amino acids. The closer the amino acid composition in the feed matches the fish's demand, the higher the efficiency with which the fish can utilize the amino acid, leading to better growth. Therefore, understanding the rational composition of feed amino acids—essentially achieving amino acid balance—is crucial for feed formulation and raw material selection.
The amino acid composition of feed is closely tied to the protein sources used. Common protein ingredients include fishmeal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, rapeseed meal, peanut meal, DDGS, corn gluten meal, soy protein concentrate, shrimp shell powder, and silkworm pupae. By combining these ingredients in the right proportions, a balanced amino acid profile can be achieved, resulting in optimal cost-performance and promoting better fish growth.
Fish amino acids are categorized into essential and non-essential. Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by the fish itself, making them critical when formulating feed. The essential amino acid composition of major protein sources in fish feed is shown in Table 1. It highlights that fishmeal has the most balanced essential amino acid profile, while plant-based sources like soybean meal show relatively good balance. However, some sources may have higher levels of specific amino acids, such as arginine in peanut meal or sulfur-containing amino acids in rapeseed meal.
By combining various protein sources, it is possible to achieve a more balanced amino acid profile, enhancing the growth performance of fish. Different fish species have different muscle amino acid compositions, so feed formulations must account for these variations. For example, Table 2 shows the amino acid content in the muscles of several farmed fish species, helping to evaluate the essential amino acid requirements of each.
The balance of feed amino acids directly affects fish and shrimp growth. When the amino acid profile of the feed aligns closely with the fish’s own needs, the utilization rate of amino acids increases, promoting better growth. Imbalances lead to waste, where excess amino acids are either excreted or used for energy, while deficiencies reduce overall efficiency. This is known as the "amino acid bucket effect."
Research has confirmed that amino acid balance significantly impacts fish growth. Experiments by scientists like Murai Takeo and Ye Yuantu showed that properly balanced feeds improved growth rates, especially when crystal amino acids were added. However, the effectiveness of crystal amino acids can vary due to factors like water solubility and absorption rates.
To evaluate amino acid balance, several methods are used, including the essential amino acid ratio method, the essential amino acid index (EAAI), and gray correlation analysis. These techniques help determine how well a feed’s amino acid profile matches an ideal model, ensuring optimal nutrition for aquatic animals.
In feed formulation, balancing amino acids is key. By analyzing the amino acid composition of feed ingredients and comparing them to the needs of fish and shrimp, feed producers can make informed decisions.
