Industry and Commerce Bureau staff: teach you a few tricks to buy furniture tips
To ensure that consumers purchase authentic furniture, officials from the Trade and Industry Bureau have shared some useful tips to help you make a smart choice. Tip 1: Check the materials. Different types of furniture use different surface materials. For example, table, chair, and cabinet legs should be made of solid wood, which is strong and can support weight. Other parts may use different materials. The thickness of wardrobe legs should be around 2.5 cm — too thick or too thin could cause problems. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets should be made of moisture-resistant plywood, not fiberboard, as the latter can swell when exposed to water. If you see insect holes or foam in the wood, it might mean the wood wasn’t properly dried. After checking the surface, open the drawers and doors to check for rot. You can also use your fingernail to test the material — if it breaks easily, it’s likely decaying. Smell the furniture too — a strong chemical odor could indicate high formaldehyde levels, which are harmful to health. Tip 2: Check the flatness. Place the furniture on the floor and gently shake it. If it wobbles or only stands on three legs, it’s not stable. Make sure the desktop is straight and doesn’t sag or collapse. When checking cabinet doors, ensure the gaps are not too wide, and the doors are aligned and don’t droop. Tip 3: Test the structure. For smaller items like chairs or stools, drag them across the floor and drop them. A crisp sound means good quality, while a dull sound with a hollow echo suggests poor construction. Shake a table to see if it feels stable. When choosing a sofa, sit on it and move around — if it makes creaking sounds or feels shaky, it may not be well-made. Tip 4: Examine the edges. If the edges are uneven, it could mean the inner material was wet, leading to peeling later. Edge banding should be rounded, not sharp at the corners. Wood strips used for sealing may crack or get damaged over time. Plywood furniture often uses nails for reinforcement, so check if the nails are flush and match the color of the surrounding area. Also, look for any bulging putty — this could mean the inside is deteriorating. Tip 5: Check mirrors carefully. When buying furniture with a mirror, such as a dressing table, take a photo to see if the mirror is warped. Ensure there is backing paper and a board behind the mirror. Without these, the mercury could wear off over time. Tip 6: Inspect the paint. The painted surfaces should be smooth and even, without cracks or bubbles. Corners should be rounded, not sharp, to avoid paint chips. The inside of cabinet doors should also be painted — if not, the boards may warp and look unattractive. Tip 7: Choose a reputable furniture store with good customer service and after-sales support. This will help reduce the risk of purchasing low-quality products and provide peace of mind in case of any issues.
