Lotus Flower Cultivation Method:

After sowing seeds, the seedlings are transplanted when they reach about 2.5 cm in height, around 20 days after planting. Then, when the seedlings grow to 5 cm, typically 30 days after transplanting, they are moved into pots that are 10 to 15 cm in size. The ideal room temperature for this stage is between 10 and 12°C. If you want to speed up growth, provide 6 to 8 hours of light daily to encourage earlier blooming. Make sure to keep the area well-ventilated and shaded during the growing season to avoid pests and leaf burn. Fertilize every two weeks, but be cautious not to overuse nitrogen, as it can lead to weak stems and poor root development.

When the flowering branches start to develop, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers once or twice to support strong blooms. Also, remove any lateral buds that appear between the leaves, as excessive side shoots can hinder the main flower's growth and cause an uneven plant shape, reducing its market value. In large-scale cultivation, when the main bud begins to grow upward, spray the leaves with a 0.2% to 0.3% CCC solution one or two times to control plant height and improve the overall appearance.

During the flowering period, water should be carefully controlled, and the room temperature should be kept between 8 and 10°C. Artificial pollination can help increase the seed set rate. As the fruit develops, the temperature gradually rises, so proper ventilation and shading are essential to ensure full maturation. If the environment becomes too hot and humid, the fruits may not mature properly, leading to plant death. Potted lotus plants are very sensitive to moisture—keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering, especially in low temperatures, which can cause root rot. Never mist the leaves directly, as this can lead to leaf diseases. After the flowering branch is removed, slightly dry the soil without letting it become completely dry to prevent unnecessary stem and leaf growth.

Lotus flowers are long-day plants, meaning they require plenty of light to thrive. Seedlings need bright, indirect sunlight to grow strong and healthy, but they should be protected from intense sun. To encourage early blooming, provide at least 14 hours of light per day, which helps form flower buds faster and shortens the overall growth cycle. The ideal soil is fertile, loose, and well-draining, preferably a sandy loam with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. A mix of garden soil, compost, and fine sand works well for potting.

For propagation, lotus is mainly grown from seeds. The seeds are small, with approximately 25,000 seeds per gram, and germinate best at temperatures between 18 and 21°C. It’s best to start sowing indoors in August or September. Sowing too early can lead to leggy seedlings due to high temperatures, while sowing too late may delay flowering.

Before planting, make sure the potting soil is sterilized to prevent disease. When planting, press the soil gently around the seeds without covering them. Place the pots in a container of water, cover them with glass or plastic, and keep them in a semi-shaded area. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 10 days. Once the cotyledons emerge, thin out the seedlings and maintain good air circulation while keeping the humidity high. Keep the room temperature between 16 and 18°C for optimal growth.
