To ensure effective pest control during the rainy season, it's essential to consider both weather conditions and the type of pesticide used. Applying pesticides after rain tends to be more effective than applying them during or immediately before rainfall. This is because the crop has already absorbed some moisture, allowing for better absorption of the active ingredients and reducing the risk of wash-off due to subsequent rain.
Choosing the right type of pesticide is also crucial. During the rainy season, it’s advisable to use systemic, fast-acting, rain-resistant, and microbial-based pesticides. Systemic pesticides such as carbendazim, triadimefon, thiophanate-methyl, carbosulfan, carbofuran, methamidophos, dimethoate, omethoate, and phosphonate are particularly effective. These products are absorbed into the plant tissue within 4 to 5 hours, minimizing loss from rain and improving overall efficacy.
Fast-acting insecticides like dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, monocrotophos, cypermethrin, and other pyrethroids work quickly—usually killing pests within 1 to 5 hours. They are less affected by rain, making them a good choice for wet conditions.
Fungicides and hygiene-related pesticides such as Jinggangmycin, trimethoprim, oxytetracycline, and kocide are also highly rain-resistant. Even after being exposed to rain for 1 to 5 hours, their effectiveness remains largely unaffected.
Microbial pesticides, including those containing *Penicillium* species or *Beauveria bassiana*, thrive in high humidity. Applying these during rainy periods can enhance their performance, as the moist environment promotes spore germination and infection of pests.
To further improve the effectiveness of pesticide sprays, adding an adhesive agent like detergent to the solution can help the product stick better to the plant surfaces. This increases the contact time between the pesticide and the target pest, leading to better control results.
For best results, mix 50–75 grams of detergent powder into 50 liters of pesticide solution. Stir well and apply immediately. Avoid storing the mixture for long periods, as this may reduce its effectiveness.
By following these guidelines, farmers can optimize their pesticide applications during the rainy season, ensuring better protection for crops while minimizing waste and environmental impact.
